Inside the Partnership
Exeger and Nordic Semiconductor have a long-term strategic partnership with a shared vision to accelerate the adoption of sustainable, light-harvesting technology. Announced in early 2023, the partnership brings together Exeger’s groundbreaking solar cell technology and Nordic’s industry-leading expertise in ultra-low-power wireless solutions. Together, the companies aim to transform how connected devices are powered – reducing dependency on disposable batteries, eliminating battery anxiety, and enabling products with near-eternal battery life or even entirely battery-free operation.
As a key outcome of the collaboration, Exeger developed the Powerfoyle Solar Shield – an innovative, out-of-the-box add-on for Nordic Semiconductor’s Thingy:91 cellular IoT prototyping platform and associated development boards. Launched in June 2023, it provides developers with plug-and-play light harvesting capabilities, to quickly start exploring the endless possibilities with solar powered IoT applications. By combining Powerfoyle’s ability to convert indoor and outdoor light into energy with Nordic’s ultra-efficient platform, the solution empowers developers to build self-charging, low-maintenance products in a very short time.

Nordic’s commitment to low power consumption design and Exeger’s sustainable Powerfoyle solar cell makes this the prototyping platform of choice for self-charging IoT electronics design. The partnership has immense potential to accelerate the adoption of light-harvesting technology and, as a result, eliminate the need for disposable batteries and the associated high costs of battery replacement. Putting the coupled technologies directly into the hands of developers creates an unparalleled opportunity to revolutionize the way future devices are powered worldwide.
“The Powerfoyle add-on is the result of a long-term strategic partnership between Nordic and Exeger to bring sustainable thinking into product design, and ultimately replacing the costly and wasteful need of replacing batteries and battery anxiety.”
